Advancing Sustainability Since 2013

GreenLight Solutions Foundation is a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit. Through our professional education programs and Student-Led Projects, we empower students, professionals, and community members to catalyze sustainable business initiatives.

Utilizing our GreenLight GuideLines project process, student members of GreenLight Solutions chapters (known as Solutioneers) gain hands-on, experiential learning opportunities. Student Solutioneers graduate with real-world experience, ready to take on sustainability challenges and make a measurable impact throughout their careers.

Businesses that GreenLight partners with (known as Project Partners) gain a passionate, innovative team to help meet their sustainability goals and create a company-wide culture of sustainability. Business leaders learn how to improve the sustainable operations of their business and are empowered to ensure the change is long-term.

More effective sustainability leaders create a ripple effect in our society, fulfilling GreenLight’s vision of a world where purpose-driven leaders create a resilient, equitable, and prosperous future for people and planet.

Mission, Vision, & Core Values

Our mission is to educate and empower students and business leaders to create positive social, environmental, and economic change through sustainability initiatives.

We envision a world where purpose-driven leaders create a resilient and equitable future for people and planet.

Our core values represent the ethos, and our ‘why’, that guides our work. Each value touches on a different facet of what we do, and each relates to the 3 pillars of sustainability (people, planet, prosperity).

Professional Development

People

To us, Professional Development means providing experiential opportunities for students and professionals to grow, thrive, and build a better future together.

Sustainability Stewardship

Planet

To us, Sustainability Stewardship means being stewards of Mother Earth to preserve our planet and natural resources for future generations.

Collaborative Community Leadership

Prosperity

To us, Collaborative Community Leadership means fostering co-creation, inclusivity, and social equity to create community solutions that improve the well-being/quality of life for all.

How We Define “Sustainability”

Our organization views sustainability from the perspective of the triple bottom line: people, planet, prosperity. Sustainability can mean many different things – from various perspectives, across space (solutions are ‘place-based’), and changes over time. In short – it’s complex. To simplify, our founders collaborated to craft an internal definition of sustainability to guide our work.

  • Sustainability is contextual and must be considered by each person or organization within the context of purpose.

  • Sustainability is broadly about promoting the healthy coexistence of all species on Earth, managing our utilization of natural resources, and mitigating potential detriments to current and future generations.

  • Sustainability is individually about becoming aware of how people economically exchange value, interact with the environment and resources, and respect and appreciate one another.

Why Sustainability is Important

The world is changing, and so is business.

Prioritizing people and environmental responsibility are basic costs of entry for businesses, now and in the future.

With countless benefits to “going green,” the business case for sustainability is clear.

“Firms that adopted environmental standards have seen a 16% increase in productivity over firms that did not adopt sustainability practices.”
-Harvard Business Review

83% of millennials say they would be more loyal to a company that helps them contribute to social or environmental issues.”
-2016 Cone Communications Millennial Engagement Study

“Corporations that are actively managing and planning for climate change secure an 18% higher ROI than companies that aren’t.”
-The Guardian
